It is difficult to isolate any one individual as an influence on the thinking about my work. Early on it would be the abstract expressionist, surrealist and modern artist in general. To name one in particular I would mention Alberto Giacometti. I was fascinated by his powerful sculptures. When I think back about where my life took a major turn I have to give a lot of credit to Fritz Dreisbach. We ran into each other at Bowling Green State University where in the mid-sixties Fritz was paying a visit to our new hot shop. I had been blowing glass in that facility unaware of the Toledo ’62 workshops at The Toledo Museum a few years earlier. Professor Carl Hall started the glass program at BG and I was one of his first recruits. Dreisbach was in the early stages of developing the glass program at the University of Toledo. Teaching classes in the original ’62 workshop studio he invited me to come work with him.

Regarding glass, Dreisbach who I consider a great artist, craftsman and educator, opened my eyes to the world of the American Craftsmen. Joel Myers, an incredibly prolific artist with an amazing sense of color and design was a strong influence and pleasure to work with. Talking with and watching Erwin Eisch work in his Frauenau studio told me a great deal about the creative process and idea development. Spending time in Alfred, New York with ceramic artist Robert Turner was an invaluable experience. Indeed, this is the short list. I have had many friends and colleagues over the years who have influenced my life and work. – Jack A. Schmidt, 2018
