Influences come from so many places. Stepping back and looking at who in particular has influenced my work the most amongst my contemporaries I would have to say hands down Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen. She has taught me so much about color theory, disregard for convention, and how to approach the material with fresh eyes.

Influences come from so many places. Stepping back and looking at who in particular has influenced my work the most amongst my contemporaries I would have to say hands down Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen. She has taught me so much about color theory, disregard for convention, and how to approach the material with fresh eyes.

Aside from that obvious and direct influence that can only be gleaned from a close working relationship, there seem to be countless influences.

The teamwork involved in creating any of my pieces requires skilled hands of individuals who are artists in their own right. We influence each other’s works technically and aesthetically whether we intend to or not, and often we collaborate on special projects which forces an artist to bend to the will of the other.

Seeing artists that have a strong understanding of the tradition and history of their discipline irrespective of the medium, who are still able to create something in a light that I haven’t seen before always pushes me to reach a little higher when creating my own work. – Raven Skyriver, 2018
