In 1967, while still working as a scientific glassblower, I saw an exhibition of Erwin Eisch’s work at the Philadelphia Art Alliance. His glass work startled me by its beauty and innovation. It made me realize how strong my feelings were and my need to be on the creative side. From that point on, I sought out contemporary glass art and started to experiment with floral glass paperweights which were considered the crown jewel of the south Jersey glass tradition.

Other artists who had a strong influence on my career were Mark Peiser, through his paperweight vessels; Morris Graves, through his floral paintings; and the poetry of Walt Whitman. These individuals were dedicated to a personal vision and a philosophy that celebrated excellence. Other notables are Harvey Littleton and Henry Halem who promoted on an educational level bringing a fine art expectation to hot glass sculpture. – Paul J. Stankard, 2018
