There was a time, in my career, when selecting an individual artist who influences my work would have been simple and direct, but at this point it is more a matter of being influenced by groups of artists, movements or schools of thought such as modernism or postmodernism.

This leads to monitoring the influences and behavior of contemporary society. You could say, as an artist, I am responsible for creating a record of my time. My recent work titled: The is the Time and This is a Record of the Time speaks to this concept. In order to make good on this effort, it becomes a matter of awareness and staying informed about the world around me – observing and translating my thoughts through my work.

I avidly read the New Yorker magazine and skim-read American Scientific, Art in America, Nature, Art Forum. I just finished reading Blink by Malcolm Gladwel and am in the midst of reading a number of other nonfiction books about futurism, philosophy, physical and social science. The resource Google is a constant companion.

Influences in my work comes from all the arts – visual, literary, musical, artists and creative thinkers of our time such as Elon Musk, Noam Chomsky, Richard Dawkins. – Michael Taylor, 2018
