Art is a magical phenomenon. Art confronts, provides insight, asks questions and perpetually renews my view of the world. After being in a skyscape by James Turrell, I see the light, the sky, the blue dome that covers our earth with different eyes. When I see the Piëta by Michelangelo, I well up and am moved to the core of my being. That is what art does to me: it changes me, it changes my perception, time and again.

There are a number of works of art/artists that are a continuous source of inspiration to me. It would be impossible to name them all, but I would like to touch on one particularly important exhibition:

In 2010 I sat across from Marina Abramovic in the MoMA for her performance ‘The Artist is Present’. This left an enormous impression on me, which will remain with me forever. After the three months (75 days) that she spent sitting, daily, at the MoMa, 75 people wrote a piece of text, each consisting of 75 words. Together, these form a unique publication, given to Marina in gratitude. My text is as follows:

75 words for Marina

The intriguing gaze. Above personal. Thoughts enter my mind but can’t find anything to hang onto. I let them go. Everything passes through. Emotions rise, Marina blinks her eyes a bit slower and I’m back on track. Time is no longer there. I don’t feel my feet anymore. It’s ultimate silence, awareness, presence. Moments of total connection with everything through the mirror of her eyes. Grateful from the bottom of my heart. Tat tvam asi.
